When it comes to the onion of the self, the layers never stop. As soon as we’re bold enough (or foolish enough) to think we’ve got ourselves figured, kablam!– A new layer of the fractal mystery of selfhood pops into our awareness. Then, of course, we have to grapple with it, contextualize it and develop nomenclature around it.
Of course, there are many examples of this in the whole orchestral hierarchy of the self– We’ve got psychological layers, social layers, physical layers, spiritual layers, smelly layers; you know what I mean. I swear, every so often, I catch myself smelling some new type of way. Where I think to myself “woah I didn’t even know that galaxy of B.O. existed!” Sadly, it does.
Anyway, over the last couple of decades, I don’t think any layer of the self has become more urgently apparent than our genetic layer. Of course we knew it existed if we were paying a shred of attention in school, but it sort of existed like the moon exists or something. In that our genes seemed highly important, yet totally outside of the scope of our influence.
However, that’s not the case anymore. With a little work, we can become genetically literate. We can gain key insights into our health, behaviors and risk factors.
Still, for me, this is an utterly new phenomenon, so I’ve gotta take solace in the folks that truly get it. I think we all do because there will be a time in the not too distant future when your ignorance will be taken advantage of by snazzy marketing. Biotech companies and all stripes of savvy shadowy gene-miners will be looking to transmute your source code into dollars. The only way to guard against that sort of dystopian future yuck is to get at least serviceably familiar with it now so we can see these things coming.
The brilliant, multitalented David Krantz is back in the mind meld to do that and more. He’s a genetic wizard that sequences and interprets people’s genomes for a living. He also specializes in how cannabis interacts with our genes, and the intersection of the mind and genetics. David also happens to be a wealth of knowledge on health and biohacking in general, so it’s always mindbogglingly fascinating chatting with him.
