Sophia is the co-author of When Plants Dream: Ayahuasca, Amazonian Shamanism, and the Global Psychedelic Renaissance. She’s also an anthropologist that works with indigenous shamans in Peru.

In this one, we rap about the power of intention, whether or not the planet is conscious, the shamanistic perspective on viruses, why ‘reality’ is probably an illusion, and much more!

There’s been a lot of talk about this odd stretch of time being a threshold of some kind. Some sort of liminal space between the old flawed way of doing things and something better. But, there’s a key ingredient required in any kind of transformational alchemy that’s not really part of the conversation— intention.

Intention is a topic I’ve been thinking a lot about ever since my Peruvian adventure. Yes, intention often takes on platitudey stink but, if you really think about what it is, it’s indispensably important. It’s the substrate of personal evolution. Without it, nothing is going to change, not in the meta or the micro. Without a clearly defined, refined intention, we’ll slip back into the path of least resistance. We’ll continue to bicker, meander, project, blame, and regress into old behavioral patterns. I wish there were some kind of top-down change coming, but I’m not counting on it. If we want this rapidly evaporating time of uncertainty to mean something, we’ve got to set and act upon intent.
